Submitting patches

Obviously it can be very useful just seeing the source code to some tool or library call or whatever in OpenSolaris.

But one of the points behind opening the source code up is that non-Sun employees can submit changes back. One of the problems with the way Apple’s opened the source code to Darwin for instance, is that they more-or-less threw the code over the fence and there was no direct way for code to be contributed the other way.

So OpenSolaris is meant to be a bi-directional thing. But has anyone actually contributed changes back successfully? How painful a process was it?

I’m really tempted to have a go and see. I’ve raised a couple of bugs, one of which would be quite trivial to fix yet I’m sure is so far down the list of importance at Sun that no-one ever will. So maybe I should just do it!

There are many folks who’ve contributed using the sponsor process. Come on over to request-sponsor, opensolaris-code, or one of the technical aliases to discuss your proposed changes. (Or mail me about the bugs you’ve filed.) — Stephen

    Hi Stephen,

I’ve been out of the office for a week, but will pop over to one of the lists you mentioned!

[…] OK, so I previously wrote about contributing code/fixes to OpenSolaris. […]
